Step-by-Step Instructions
- Begin by dicing or slicing your firm, sweet apples such as Honeycrisp or Fuji. Measure out 1 cup of old-fashioned rolled oats and 2 cups of water or milk.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter until it shimmers. Add your prepared apples along with a pinch of salt. Sauté for 4 to 5 minutes until golden-brown and softened.
- Sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and stir in. Cook for another minute. If you want extra sweetness, stir in 1 tablespoon of honey or maple syrup and cook until it thickens slightly.
- In a separate pot, bring 2 cups of water or milk to a rolling boil. Reduce heat to low and add the rolled oats. Simmer gently for 5 to 7 minutes until creamy and tender.
- Once the oats have thickened, remove from heat. Spoon creamy oats into warm bowls, topping each with caramelized apples. Drizzle with additional honey or maple syrup and sprinkle with chopped nuts.
