Equipment

  • cast iron skillet
  • Rolling Pin

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, combine 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and ¾ cup of warm water to activate the yeast. Allow the mixture to sit for approximately 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture, ½ cup of plain yogurt, and 2 tablespoons of oil or ghee. Stir until the dough begins to come together, then knead on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  3. Place your kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, covering it. Set in a warm area to rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  4. After rising, punch down the dough lightly. Divide it into 8 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Roll each ball into an 8-inch oval about ¼ inch thick.
  5. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly grease it and place one rolled naan onto the skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes until golden brown, then flip and cook for another minute.
  6. Mix 2 tablespoons of melted butter with 2-3 cloves of minced garlic. Brush the garlic-butter mixture over the hot naan and garnish with salt and chopped cilantro or parsley.
