  • 1 cup cheese optional topping; try sharp cheddar or parmesan

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare your baking dish by greasing it with butter or lining it with parchment paper.
  2. Melt a few tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the chopped onions and a pinch of salt, sauté for about 8–10 minutes until golden.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, mix melted butter, milk, and egg until smooth. Gradually add wet to dry ingredients, mixing gently.
  4. Spread the dough in the greased baking dish, spoon sautéed onions over it, sprinkle with cheese if desired. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Slice into squares and serve warm.
