- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare your baking dish by greasing it with butter or lining it with parchment paper.
- Melt a few tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the chopped onions and a pinch of salt, sauté for about 8–10 minutes until golden.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, mix melted butter, milk, and egg until smooth. Gradually add wet to dry ingredients, mixing gently.
- Spread the dough in the greased baking dish, spoon sautéed onions over it, sprinkle with cheese if desired. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Slice into squares and serve warm.
