Ingredients

For the Shrimp Mixture
  • 1 pound shrimp, fresh or frozen, peeled and deveined
  • 1 large egg or flax egg for vegan option
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs panko for crunchier texture
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper adjust to taste
  • fresh herbs (optional) basil, cilantro, or parsley
For Stuffing (optional)
  • 4 ounces cream cheese or avocado for dairy-free

Equipment

  • deep fryer or large skillet

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Begin by finely chopping the shrimp or pulsing it in a food processor until roughly chopped, taking care not to overprocess.
  2. In the bowl with your chopped shrimp, add seasoned breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper. Mix everything gently until just combined.
  3. With wet hands, take small portions of the shrimp mixture and form them into balls about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on a tray lined with parchment paper.
  4. In a deep fryer or large skillet, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). To test the oil’s readiness, drop a small piece of the shrimp mixture in; it should sizzle.
  5. Carefully add the shrimp balls in batches to the hot oil, frying for about 4-5 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Once done, remove them from the oil with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  7. Serve your warm shrimp balls with your choice of dipping sauces like sweet chili or aioli.
