Ingredients
  

For the Filling
  • 1 lb Ground Beef Substitute with ground lamb for an authentic twist.
  • 1 large Onion Finely chopped for even texture.
  • 1 cup Tomato Sauce Or use diced tomatoes for chunkier filling.
  • 1/2 cup Rice White rice is preferred; par-cook brown rice if using.
  • 1 tsp Oregano Italian seasoning can be a suitable alternative.
  • 1 tsp Salt Adjust according to taste.
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper Adjust according to taste.
For the Crust
  • 1 package Phyllo Dough Creates a crispy, flaky crust.
  • 1/2 cup Butter or Oil Olive oil recommended for Mediterranean flavor.

Method
 

Kreatopita Instructions
  1. Heat a drizzle of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 5-7 minutes, or until the onion is soft and translucent.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook for 8-10 minutes until browned and no longer pink.
  3. Stir in uncooked rice, tomato sauce, oregano, salt, and pepper. Add about a cup of water and bring to a gentle simmer over low heat for 10-12 minutes.
  4. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with melted butter or oil.
  5. Layer five sheets of phyllo dough in the baking dish, brushing each layer with melted butter.
  6. Spoon the beef and rice filling evenly over the phyllo layers.
  7. Layer another five sheets of phyllo dough on top, brushing each with butter and tucking edges in.
  8. Bake the assembled Kreatopita in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Let the Kreatopita cool for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving warm.
