Step-by-Step Instructions for Best Chili Dogs
- Start by heating a medium skillet over medium heat. Add your ground beef along with finely chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook for about 7-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and the onions are translucent. Make sure to drain any excess fat to keep your chili rich but not greasy.
- Once your beef is browned, stir in the tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne (if desired), salt, black pepper, sugar, and a splash of water or broth. Mix everything thoroughly and allow the flavors to meld together.
- Reduce the heat to low and let your chili mixture simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- While the chili simmers, grill or pan-fry your hot dogs until heated through and start to brown slightly, about 5-7 minutes.
- Once the hot dogs are grilled and the chili is simmered to perfection, place each hot dog in its bun, generously spooning the warm chili over the top. Then, sprinkle a good amount of shredded cheddar cheese on each one.
- Garnish your chili dogs with optional toppings like crunchy raw onions, mustard, or mayonnaise for added flavor. Serve immediately.
